Laser Highway – April 2019

In April, Laser Highway flicks on dark mode as we explore sights and sounds in the more evil side of cult electronica. We’re proud to host two acts linked closely with the local dark electronic scene making their Laser Highway debut, rounded out with favourite regulars to make this night a delightful delve into a digital dystopia.

SHIV-R (LIVE)

Since their debut album release in 2010, Australian electro-industrial act SHIV-R have made an impact on the international dark alternative music scene and set themselves apart with a uniquely hard-hitting yet elegant sonic aesthetic. The group have toured extensively throughout over 20 countries including festivals in Europe and North America and have received heavy rotation on industrial dancefloors worldwide with their releases hitting number 1 on the DAC (German Alternative Charts) and top 10 in the GEWC (German Electronic Web Charts).

SHIV-R’s members Pete Crane (vocals & music) and Ben Bulig (music) continue to push for musical evolution and self-expression, presenting their project with a provocatively dark, lace-filtered visual style, to create a result that is altogether monstrously seductive.

NEIL ORCHARD

Neil Orchard etched out his musical path listening to the otherworldly sounds of obscure funk and European electronic music from the 70s and 80s. Exploring an array of sound archives from Belgium to Detroit and beyond, the physical journey continued though the steamy basements and factories of Melbourne’s rave scene of the 90s.

Playing recently at Techno Insurgency, Big Red Bus, and Earthcore, get ready for a sci-fi trip into a tapestry of dark, atmospheric, synth-heavy, analogue sounds. “For me, the mix is what counts, rather than specific tracks or genres. How can I sculpt something fresh out of old and new sounds?” Fun fact: When people ask Neil what his favourite music is, and he replies with EBM, he has to correct people when they think he likes EDM. Big difference.

We kick 2019 off with a bang as Laser Highway’s Summer of Synth continues featuring one of the most exciting cyberpunk/industrial-influenced retrowave producers out of Europe: Megahit! Rounding out the lineup with the finest and most knowledgeable local selectors, prepare yourselves for a night of cyber-synth madness!

MEGAHIT LIVE (HUNGARY)

Megahit is a one-man retrowave / synthwave / outrun style music project from Hungary. Inspired by the audiovisual content of 1980s retrocomputing, he focuses on driving electronic soundscapes mixed with industrial and cyberpunk elements, with a few exceptions incorporating friendlier, Miami Vice-like feelings.

The project started out in mid-2015 with its very first release, The Future Was Yesterday EP, containing 80s retro-electro sounds. Later that year came a second digital EP, Objects In The Mirror Are Losing, which already contained dark futuristic, cyberpunk elements. The whole cyberpunk concept culminated in the first LP release, titled Days Of Violence in February 2016. In the summer, Megahit did a detour to bring some light summer vibes with a love-themed conceptual High School Boys And Disco Queens EP, a flick on the setting and atmosphere of 80s’ shcool kids TV shows.

In September 2017, Megahit released his first full-length conceptual album, Wrath Of The Machine, which was the first phisycal release in the history of the project. Besides the digital version, the album was released as limited CD digipaks and cassette tapes, which were sold out just weeks after release. The album revolves around a post-apocalyptic setting where computers have taken over the world and the remaining humans try to fight their digital enemies. Each track on the album present a building block in the history of computers – in both positive and negative aspects.

Megahit’s performance usually features live keyboard playing and synthesizer sequencing, spiced up with audio-synchronized visuals, in the style of 1980s computer animations, action movies and various television spots.

In December, we’re activating the time circuits, charging our flux capacitors with 1.21 Jigawatts (what the hell is a Jigawatt?) and slamming the accelerator to hit 88MPH! You’re gonna see some serious sh!t. We promise a night of pure adrenaline-fueled synthscapes for you to dance and play as we outrun the sun. Laser Highway’s Summer of Synth has begun!

WATER AND BRIDGES (NSW – Decks and guitars)

Andrew Morrow AKA ‘Water And Bridges’ (W&B) has been active in the Australian music scene since 2005. Like many, W&B started out
in garage rock and punk bands during high school but quickly became fascinated with electronic music. This interest led to a string
of mashups and remixes that made their way onto the early days of Soundcloud. These tracks amassed over 11,000 plays and were the
catalyst and motivation needed to dive deeper into the creation of original music.

Andrew began to expand his sound and worked in tandem on an album-length release of this newer material. ‘Tales From The City’, W&B’s debut album, released on December 27th 2017. Tracks from this release quickly began appearing on Spotify retrowave playlists and review sites across the web, garnering positive feedback for it’s traditionally retro sound and themes.

Since this release, W&B has taken a year to write, produce and refine his sophomore record, ‘Starbound’, which is due to be released in late 2018. The first single from this record, ‘Battlestations!’, a synth-rock tribute to the masterworks of Journey and Stan Bush, has received airplay on The Faction and Artefaktor radio, a feature of Neon Nights, and held the #1 ranking on the Triple J Unearthed metal charts for three consecutive weeks.

FUTURE FATE (EP Launch)

A prophecy foretold of the coming of Okimra. It tells that at the precipice of the technological era an AI will rise to consume the world of man. Our dependence on technology had made the entity all powerful and its thirst to destroy had led to the destruction of every major city on earth. It is a sum total machine, a dystopian symbiote, that powers itself by sucking up and assimilating every mechanical thing in its path. Its destructive power is matched only by its disdain for all living things.

The Mechanism was created by the father of AI to safeguard humanity against an uprising. After his untimely death it was thought that all hope was lost in the war against Okimra. The Mechanism could only be activated by one who was worthy of the knowledge it held within. A series of tasks would have to be completed in order to activate the mechanism, and with mankind on the brink of destruction, a legendary hero would need to rise in order to decipher the mechanism and save the planet. To be continued….

Future Fate will be performing a special DJ set featuring a tracklist of wholly original creations.

MATT DAEMON

Matt Daemon conjures a sonic pallette of nostalgic 80s retro electro with darker brooding elements. In our opinion, it’s been far too long since he has graced the LH stage! You can expect a wide range of darker synthwave selections from his favourite producers sprinkled amongst his original creations.

ZEROTONINE

Zerotonine is the host, resident DJ and runs Australia’s first and only monthly club night dedicated to synthwave, outrun and retro electro: Laser Highway in Melbourne. As a labour of love, he is dedicated to providing a unique experience for music makers and fans alike. He is also the co-host of www.kissfm.com.au’s (87.6 in Melbourne) Retro Electro Show from 2pm Wednesdays AEST.

A veteran DJ and creator for over a decade playing too many genres internationally and at home in Australia, he is in love with arpeggio basslines, warm synths, and driving drums; his style is inspired by 80’s movies, the Lamborghini Countach, boss fights, neon vectors, keytars, androids, reverb guitars, gated drums, cosmic phenomena, bleeps and bloops. Expect a range of sonic styles to get your feet stomping and head rocking from all corners of the retro-verse.

Laser Highway – August 2018

In August, we’re unshackling from the optimistic retro future and taking a trip to the grim acid rain-slicked streets of the year 20XX! Whip out your Ono-Sendai Cyberdecks, tool up with your best smartlink handcannon, call in muscle from your best Razorgirl and prepare to raid mega-corporations in the way that hurts them the most: their data. Leading the charge through the Matrix are Melbourne-based cyberpunk heroes SIRUS playing a very special instrumental-only set as a duo! Running support operations to guide you through walls of Black ICE are three DJs putting their lives on the line to give you a party you won’t soon forget.

SIRUS (LIVE INSTRUMENTAL SET)

SIRUS is a Cyberpunk music project based in Melbourne, Australia.
Long regarded as one of Melbourne’s leading Electro-Industrial bands, SIRUS is gaining traction internationally thanks to their uncompromising efforts in production and experimentation with hybrid electronica.

With influences spanning EDM, Synthwave, and World Music, and with each live performance including unique arrangements of content not present in any recorded material, SIRUS are a force to be reckoned with.

Sharing the stage with scene heavyweights such as 3Teeth, Combichrist, Hocico, Grendel, Aesthetic Perfection and Savant, to name just a few, they now reach out to conquer even more sonic territory- this time through a hybrid live mix of their instrumental discography.

Producer/Vocalist Josh Rombout and Keytarist/DJ Andrew Waugh will be delving into the SIRUS archives to summon the more eclectic parts of their dance music side.

D-GEN

D-GEN was first recognised as a Jungle & Techno DJ at underground events and raves in the early New Zealand electronica scene during the mid nineties, immediately driving for the breakbeat sound as he designed sets of low profile, hard hitting music evolving through Drum & Bass / breakbeat and into Tech House & retro inspired Electro. Sam also is the founding member for Kiss FM’s Retro Electro Show that he hosts with Zerotonine!
